What is Tekla Structures used for?
Tekla Structures is an industry-standard Building Information Modeling (BIM) software used for 3D structural modeling and detailing of steel, concrete, and timber structures. It generates precise fabrication drawings, bill of materials (BOM), erection plans, and CNC machine files (NC files) directly from the 3D model.
What is a Grid in Tekla Structures?
A grid is a 3D reference coordinate system comprising X, Y, and Z plane intersections. It serves as the master geometric framework for accurately placing columns, beams, footings, and levels throughout the structure.
What is the difference between a Part and an Assembly in Tekla?
A Part is a single fabricated element (such as an individual beam, stiffener plate, or column shaft). An Assembly consists of a main part with attached secondary parts (such as gussets, base plates, and clips welded together) that are fabricated and shipped as a single structural unit to the erection site.
What is IFC and why is it important in Tekla?
IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is the open global standard for openBIM interoperability. Tekla imports and exports IFC data to coordinate 3D models seamlessly with architects (Revit, ArchiCAD), MEP engineers, and general contractors for multi-disciplinary clash detection without proprietary format locks.
What is clash checking in Tekla?
Clash checking (interference checking) is an automated spatial verification tool within Tekla Structures that identifies physical collisions between structural steel members, bolts, rebar, and reference architectural models. Catching clashes during modeling prevents costly re-work in the workshop and on site.
How are NC (Numerical Control) files generated in Tekla?
NC files are exported directly from Tekla's Drawings & Reports engine using standard DSTV format. They provide machine-level geometric coordinates for automated beam drill lines, plate oxy-fuel/plasma cutters, and coping robots with sub-millimeter precision.
